Jack LONDON

Jack London (the District) occupies the part of Oakland south of Interstate 880 along The Embarcadero. It includes the Jack London Square, the Produce District and the Oakland Amtrak Station.

The area started as the warehouse and industrial district for Oakland where the Transcontinental Railroad connected to the Pacific at the Oakland Long Wharf.  As the railroad grew, so did Oakland and it's waterfront. Rail lines once ran directly alongside warehouse buildings along Second, Third, and Fourth Streets, so that freight could be loaded directly from box cars to and from the warehouses.

Today, the area is a vibrant mix of housing (mostly lofts, conversions and live/work), industrial, entertainment and business.
